MI21_2009_uktourbanner

KALA PHOOL is proud to announce the MI21 UK TOUR 2009.

MI21 (Mother India 21st Century Remix) is a live soundtrack performance.

The original film Mother India (1957) is a hugely important film in South Asian cinema, known for it’s iconic imagery and powerful storyline: the common shorthand is to reference it as India’s ‘Gone with the wind’

MI21 essentially remixes, re-edits and rescores the original 3 hour film into a 45 minute silent film over which lead artist DJ Tigerstyle has created a contemporary electronic and strings based score. DJ Tigerstyle who is one of the worlds top Turntablist’s is accompanied by – Matt Constantine who plays keyboards and his beautiful electric cello – David Shaw on drums – Josh Ford on visuals.

MI21 will be touring across the UK and at a venue near you.

Some of the venues will have additional special events alongside the performance including:

  • extended DJ Tigerstyle set
  • post show discussion
  • film screenings

For all venues, dates, links to footage, images, a video of DJ Tigerstyle in action or to connect with this amazing tour, please visit:
www.myspace.com/kalaphool
www.facebook.com/kalaphool

The performance is suitable for all ages, and don’t worry if you have not seen the film before…let the music tell you the story and take you on the most incredible journey. We look forward to welcoming you, your friends and family to one of the UKs most anticipated events of 2009.
MI21 kicked off in Edinburgh to a capacity audience of 1200, continued applause and ending with a standing ovation. Its the best start we could hope for and thank everyone who has supported us so far. We are now gearing up for our 2nd date of the TOUR @ Rich Mix in London on Saturday 8th August – it all kicks off from 9pm.

Mother India – 21st Century Remix (MI21)

Monday, June 1st, 2009

MI21 is a dynamic live audio/visual project to re-score and re-visualize the groundbreaking ‘tour-de-force’ of Indian cinematic history ‘Mother India’.

Nominated for an Oscar for best Foreign Film in 1957, the film came to symbolise the post-colonial Indian psyche interpreted through the ambitions, struggles, compassion and sheer will to survive of the central ‘Mother’ character Radha. Profoundly influential, Mother India was lauded for its stunning cinematography, indelible soundtrack and powerful and dramatic storyline.

KALA PHOOL has brought the film to one of the world’s leading Turntablists; DJ Tigerstyle, to reinterpret the score through a unique live electronic performance. Former World DMC Champion Tigerstyle will use his phenomenal DJ skills and musical vision to remix the score with Matt Constantine on keyboards and cello, with David Shaw on drums. Film edited by Josh Ford. Presenting the film to a contemporary audience, whilst preserving the power and vitality of the original piece is the key to this work. At 45minutes in length, MI21 will engage you through the music to understand how dynamic a story the film has to tell.

2009 was the highly acclaimed sell out UK tour for MI21 with thousands of people experience this for themselves. Plans for 2010 include taking MI21 across international territories along with some exclusive UK dates.

MI21 was taken to the mighty shores of Australia in 2010 with a short residency at Melbourne’s famous, Victoria Arts Centre. There we built a site specific stage, the staff were unbelievable and thoroughly looked after us all, and the crowd were amazing. A truly electrifying experience for the MI21 crew. After Melbourne we jetted off to Sydney and performed at the awe inspiring Sydney Opera House.

The Australian tour was co-sponsored by British Council Australia and by the venues dipping into their pockets – all in all the collaboration was a special one.

2011 is proving to be just as exciting with lots of inquiries. As and when things get locked down we will update our info for you. In the meantime, thank you to everyone from around the globe who have come forward showing their support and need for such a project. MI21 has always, and hopefully continue to be, a project for the masses – its not a commercial venture but one of love and respect for such a unique and powerful piece of cinema history.

Film maker, editor & all round artistic genius needed for MI21 project – URGENT

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

One of the most innovative projects youre likely to be involved in needs your help!

MI21 ( Mother India: 21st Century Remix) is a live re-scoring of the Bollywood classic that has so far blown audiences away. The musicians will be in the studio (in Birmingham) next week to record the soundtrack and we’re are trying to put together a national tour for later in the year.

We’re are after a film maker to make a kind of video ‘calling card’ for this. However, the bad news is there’s no budget available for the work. But being involved will massively help the project and help expose yourself to a wide audience as it will be the main visual that many festivals, venues and organisations will see.

You’ll need your own equipment where possible, beable to edit the footage ready and work within the timescale.

If you’re still interested: Filming will happen on Fri/Sat 16-17 January at studios in Aston near The Drum in Birmingham.

  • We need some short interviews with the people involved and some footage of the band in the studio. There’s plenty of footage from the live shows already that can be used alongside.
  • We’re looking for something like the video of The Bays and Heritage Orchestra at the Liverpool Phil.
  • The finished piece will be needed by the end of January the absolute latest.
  • If you can help then email indy@kalaphool.com or call on 07977 449052.
